I think Vex will work with EMF but I don't know for sure. If you find problems with EMF then please open a bug.

I saw oXygen only once some years ago and I mistook the oXygen-based for a Vex-based product. The basic idea is the same. Vex is open source software but probably more development time has spent on Oxygen for e.g. better table and image support.

Is it compatible with EMF?
For example, if the XML file is simultaneous managed by Vex and by an EMF(/XSD) based application, how does it work?

Don’t get it wrong. Here the LOCs are used to give an impression of the total amount of simultaneously released products and not the programming progress of the Eclipse Java IDE which is only one of these 72 projects. Neither Bill Gates’ products are known as lightweight nor his products are always released on time.
